Chapter 3

The dictionary defines the word esteem to be “to set a high value and regard highly in prize accordingly. But to overesteem would be to do this too much, it would mean placing too much value on something. So if you overesteem great men then other people become powerless.

This reminds me of a experiment that I read about where nine out of 10 people are in an experiment and those nine people adamantly choose the wrong answer to a question that has been posted to the group. The experiment was to see how often that 10th person would stand up for themselves and go against the other nine people and choose the answer that was obviously correct or would they go along with the other nine people and choose the wrong answer. The outcome of the experiment greatly depending on the make up of the nine people. If those nine people were viewed as highly intelligent or in some high position within their profession then 10th person more than often would follow along.

If we get someone to much power then it takes away from our power.

The next line says if we over value something, then people will begin to steal. People don’t steal things that have no value, this is true. This just makes me think of those tennis shoes that are just tennis shoes but they have some famous man’s name on them or a famous person designed them and this pair of tennis shoes, which should cost about $35 down at Kmart, end up costing hundreds of dollars, just because society has placed a huge value on them. But then kids can’t even wear them to school because they’re afraid they’ll get stolen.

  • Great chapter! So confusing, though. I think it’s about liberation through freedom from rulers and goals, and letting the right thing happen.
